You might have concerns about maintaining prostate health, sexual performance, flexible joints, and lean muscle mass.

Honoring Our Men and Father Figures

Summer has arrived. The days are longer, and it’s time to relax and spend more hours outdoors. It’s also a great time to evaluate your health regimen, especially if you are “a man on the go.”

So, gents, ask yourself this: “Am I taking care of myself?”

Sooner or later, all men are faced with working a bit harder to stay in shape. You might have concerns about maintaining prostate health, sexual performance, flexible joints, and lean muscle mass . . . not to mention staying balanced at work, play and everyday life.

We at Life Priority would like to honor all men by showing you how to rev up your health regimen. In consideration of the special health needs of men we offer Prostate Priority, Muscle Memory and Total Joint Complex— designed with special herbs, amino acids and other nutrients to support your lifestyle and protect your health.

Prostate health

Did you know that if you are a man living in the United States it’s almost inevitable you’ll eventually have to face prostate problems? The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut and sits just below the bladder, in front of the rectum. It has the important job of producing the milky fluid that becomes part of semen. And in this case, size does matter because when the prostate becomes enlarged you have to deal with annoying and sometimes painful symptoms.

Maybe you already have some of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland.

Do you:

* Get up several times during the night to go to the bathroom?

* Have trouble getting your “stream” to start?

* Are on a constant lookout for the men’s room?

* Need to “go” so urgently you can’t wait?

* Feel like you haven’t emptied your bladder completely after urinating?

* Strain in order to urinate?

* Suffer from the devastating embarrassment of incontinence?

Life Priority’s Prostate Priority™ can help!

What exactly is an enlarged prostate gland?

The prostate gland begins to grow in most males after they reach 40 years of age because DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a potent form of the male hormone testosterone, increases in the body. Testosterone is produced by the testicles and the adrenal glands and DHT accumulates in the prostate, causing prostate cells to rapidly divide. This overgrowth of prostate tissue compresses the urethra and slows or even stops the flow of urine in a similar way that a bent garden hose inhibits the flow of water. The occurs in 75 percent of men over 60 and sometimes the enlargement is the result of a more serious nature.

Take care of your health today

Prostate Priority™ contains the saw palmetto berry used in Europe since the 1970’s. The berry is derived from a small palm tree native to the Atlantic Coast of North America. Native Americans consumed its olive-sized berries as a normal part of their diet and brewed it as a tea for urinary and sexual problems. Today, numerous studies have found that saw palmetto contains fatty acids and sterols effective in balancing male hormones, supporting testicular functions, and relieving prostate discomfort.

Saw Palmetto provides a number of powerful health benefits by:

  • Reducing the level of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by blocking its receptor sites in the prostate, and by inhibiting enzymes necessary for DHT conversion.
  • Helping shrink over-grown prostate tissue without bothersome side effects.

Benefits at a Glance:

  • Supports prostate and reproductive health with cutting-edge nutrients
  • Helps protect against excess estrogen levels
  • Promotes healthy prostate size and structure
  • Inhibits undesirable cell division changes
  • Supports healthy urinary patterns and flow

What man doesn’t want a strong erection?

L-Arginine – is an amino acid that is involved in the production of nitric oxide, a chemical released by the blood that helps the muscles in the penis to relax. This, in turn, allows healthy blood flow in order to sustain a healthy erection.

But it does much more! When taken as a nutritional supplement l-arginine helps increase growth hormone levels. Here’s how: The hypothalamus manufactures two biochemicals that regulate the amount of growth hormone released by the pituitary gland. One biochemical stimulates growth hormone production and the other serves to put on the brakes. l-Arginine works to decrease the amount of the “braking” biochemical produced by the pituitary. In turn, this increases the amount of the stimulating hormone reaching the pituitary and causes an increase in growth hormone release.

The benefits of Growth Hormone Factor

Optimal levels of growth hormone are associated with deeper sleep, more energy throughout the day, increased exercise strength and/or endurance, faster hair and nail growth, a general attitude improvement, and a feeling of well-being. Not bad!

Additionally, when Life Priority’s New Improved Muscle Memory™, which contains 6 grams of arginine per serving, is taken along with choline and B-5, it helps you build lean muscle mass by maintaining a youthful ratio of muscle to fat. This effect is sometimes called “protein sparing” because growth hormone tends to protect body protein from being used as an energy source.

Life Priority’s New Improved Muscle Memory™ is an excellent supplement to add to your regimen to help you maintain a lean muscular physique, enhance healthy aging, and to support your vitality, youthfulness, and overall physical fitness.

By the way, this product is not just for men. It also benefits women. It works to increase growth hormone factor, and the l-arginine works as a pro-sexual supplement helping women to achieve orgasm more easily.

Joint health

Do you get stiff after rough-housing with the kids, being a weekend warrior, or just sitting at your desk all day?

You have about 230 joints in your body. They are responsible for keeping you vertical and mobile. An active life style can be hard on overused joint, but a sedentary lifestyle can be even more harmful.  Exercise keeps us healthy and limber but inevitably increases the wear and tear on our joints. Additionally, repetitive motion at a job and inactivity after work can cause joints, tendons, and muscles to atrophy or become weak.

Bones and connective tissue are made of both minerals and proteins which give them strength and elasticity. As we age our bones tend to lose minerals and our connective tissue (ligaments, tendons, cartilage) loses structural proteins.

Hundreds of studies have shown that glucosamine and chondroitin can provide joint support naturally and may be a great alternative to traditional therapies that can lead to undesirable side effects.

Life Priority’s formulators designed a joint supplement to help you no matter what your lifestyle is. We’ve combined glucosamine and chondroitin with four other natural ingredients —MSM, Boswellia serrata, Bromelain and Turmeric—that also have scientific and anecdotal evidence showing how they can protect joint health and keep you moving today . . . and, hopefully, years from now.

Your joints move and flex all day, every day.  With wear and tear, aging, and possible injury, it is important to provide the best nutritional foundation for these complex components of your musculoskeletal system.  Your joints deserve the best nutrition and protection science and nature can offer.

Take advantage of Life Priority’s nutritional supplements to target the areas of your health that can use all the support they can get.

June and Men’s Health!

This month we are all taking time out to honor the important men in our lives by celebrating Father’s Day. At Life Priority we encourage you toIt’s known fact most men only go to the doctor when they are sick. This creates the generalization that men are too casual about their health. recognize the DAD’S and male role models who have coached us, encouraged us, loved us, and provided for us.taught us and protected us.  At Life Priority want to express our sincere gratitude  and take June as special month to focus on Men’s health. We all need support and encouragement so help are our top tips to support those special DAD”S and role models.

At Life Priority, our mission is health, and we can’t think of any better gift to give our dads than that of increased wellness and energy. That’s why this month we are offering a few men’s health tips that can help fathers enjoy their families for years to come!

1. Don’t smoke. By now this should go without saying, but many men still cling to the cigarette habit. Unfortunately, smoking dramatically increases your risk for heart disease, cancer and a number of other diseases and is responsible for one in five deaths in the United States every year. Dads, if you want to be around to enjoy your family, give yourself the gift of kicking the smoking habit!

2. Watch your weight. This so much more than just about looking good. Maintaining a healthy weight increases your quality of life by giving you energy, decreasing your risk of death and disease and by helping ward off depression. Find ways to incorporate more healthy foods into your diet in place of junk foods and make time for regular exercise.

3. Drink wisely. There are so many benefits to limiting alcohol intake to a moderate level that we could write another blog entirely on this subject. Excessive alcohol increases your risk for disease, depression, accidents and social irresponsibility. And, of course, by not limiting your alcohol, you also run the risk of addiction. Don’t put yourself or your family in that situation. Limit yourself to, at most, one or two standard-sized drinks per day.

4. Get checked out. While it’s not fun, it’s still necessary to see your doctor regularly and be screened for high cholesterol, high blood pressure and common cancers. Early detection is particularly key when it comes to colon and prostate cancer, so don’t put this on the backburner. Bite the bullet and get on your doctor’s calendar!

5. Take your vitamins! While they’re not an excuse to avoid healthy foods, common multivitamins and supplements can go a long way in preventing health problems. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your specific needs and what vitamins and supplements would be right for you based on lifestyle and family history.

They say that the best gifts in life are free, and we believe that’s true—especially when it comes to health. If you are a dad or just hope to become one someday, give yourself a great Father’s Day gift by choosing to take care of your health. Wellness is the kind of present that will keep on giving long after the golf clubs or neckties have lost their appeal. So take our advice and choose to live a full, fit life. And, if there’s any way we at Life Priority can help you get started and stay on track, call us today!

10 Tips to Maintain Your Prostate Health

With today’s fast-paced lifestyles, most men are faced with increasing mental and physical demands as they age.  These demands can affect your health, including your prostate.  To help you protect your health and prostate, we offer you these 10 valuable tips!

10 Tips to Help Protect Your Prostate

  1. Maintain a healthy weight, and exercise daily.
  2. Limit your trans-fat consumption.
  3. Eat more fish that contains essential fatty acids (EFAs).
  4. Work helpful nutrients into your diet. Eat cooked tomatoes that contain Lycopene. Cook with olive oil, and add cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower into your meals. Eat soy and drink green tea for antioxidant support.
  5. Avoid smoking and consume alcohol only in moderation.
  6. Use a quality multivitamin to ensure the consumption of essential nutrients.
  7. Keep a health journal to help stay disciplined. Set goals, take charge and measure your success.
  8. Get regular physicals with your healthcare professional. Seek medical treatment for stress, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression.
  9. Develop a positive attitude. Relax, reduce stress, and enjoy life.
  10. Remember that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

We Celebrate June by Celebrating Men’s Health

Personally, I have found that an easy, logical way to slow down my aging process is to keep my body and brain more fit through the use of a few essential supplements with each meal. I urge all men to consider the use of the following supplements to help protect your prostate:

I feel that the consistent, daily use of the right nutrients in supplement form (and in adequate amounts!) is one of the most important health decisions that we can make. Based on the past 20 years of being in the dietary supplement industry through Life Priority, and my 16-year career as a pro athlete, I feel strongly that using high-quality supplements is imperative. Your diet is most likely lacking in one or more essential nutrients. You can help yourself feel better and slow up your personal aging process by using high-quality supplements.

In addition, men are at increased risk for heart-related issues including heart attack and cardiovascular disease. They are also at a higher risk for prostate cancer. Both heart disease and prostate cancer affect millions of men every year, and take many away from their families and friends far too soon. If men can incorporate more exercise, consume more fish with essential fatty acids (EFAs), visit their doctors regularly and watch out for depression and high blood pressure, stop smoking and use a daily multivitamin, they can increase their life expectancy and live healthier, fuller lives.

I have been involved as a retail customer or a marketer of dietary supplements since 1991.  Don’t leave your physical and mental well-being up to anyone else! It’s your life! Your body, including your brain, is aging each day and you can give yourself a better chance at living a healthier (and happier!) life by simply using enough of the right nutrients each day with meals or at bedtime.

I helped form Life Priority, Inc. in 1994 to secure the nutritional products I wanted for my own personal use.  A major reason that Life Priority was formed was because of the research of two scientists who were the co-authors of a New York Times best-seller Life Extension, A Practical Scientific Approach, which was written specifically for doctors. The authors, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw, wrote Life Extension so that doctors could understand how using certain nutrients in adequate amounts could slow up the aging process.

To your health!

Memorial Day 2022

Remembering & Honoring All Who Served

Life Priority would like to thank the families that have lost a loved one while in service of our nation. Special thanks to veterans who have protected America and life-guarded our freedoms.

The Murph Challenge: A Memorial Day Tribute to the Fallen

Every Memorial Day, fitness enthusiasts and newcomers around the country and across the globe prepare to honor fallen Navy SEAL Michael P. Murphy and many others who have made the ultimate sacrifice by completing “The Murph Challenge.” The grueling workout consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another one-mile run.

Murphy originally dubbed the workout “Body Armor” as he executed the routine with a 20-pound protective vest. He developed the workout as a functional routine that was practical for his work as a SEAL. While his average time was between 32 and 34 minutes, his best time was reportedly just over 28 minutes. The workout would prove invaluable in the treacherous mountains of Afghanistan.

Thank you to Women and Mothers Everywhere

May is the special month we honor the women who have made a difference in our lives.

We at Life Priority would like to honor all women by showing you ways to rev up your health regimen. Your loved ones will thank you in return. . . because you will feel a renewed sense of well-being and confidence in knowing how you can easily improve your health. And we all know that when the special women in our lives feel good everyone feels good.

Home is where the heart is

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women each year, killing 1 in 4, and 5 times as many women as breast cancer?

Up until a woman enters menopause, the female hormone estrogen offers protection against heart disease by maintaining levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.  Estrogen also helps to relax the smooth muscle of the arteries, which supports healthy blood pressure. These benefits disappear after menopause, which is why the risk for heart disease rises in women later than in men. But women of all ages should be concerned about maintaining a healthy heart.

Additionally, since a woman’s heart, arteries and other blood vessels are smaller than a man’s it takes less plaque to fill them up. Women also tend to have blockages in the smaller arteries that supply blood to the heart, not just in the main arteries.

10 ways to support a healthy heart

  1. Eat a nutritious, high-fiber, low-fat heart healthy diet
  2. Include foods high in phytonutrients (the nutrients found in plants)
  3. Get plenty of foods containing omega-3 fatty acids (cold water fish) or take Life Priority’s Omega-3 Priority. Vegetarians should take flax seed oil or ground flax seed.
  4. Practice a stress reduction technique, such as yoga or meditation
  5. Exercise
  6. Stop smoking!
  7. Reduce and/or avoid alcohol
  8. Get an annual physical exam to rule out other health factor risks
  9. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of purified water every day
  10. Get plenty of restful sleep!

But that’s not all! Now is the time to start taking important heart-healthy supplements.

  1. CoQ10 (also known as Coenzyme Q10 and ubiquinone) is a co-enzyme and antioxidant found in the mitochondria of every cell and in high concentrations in heart tissue. It helps maintain cardiovascular health and promotes vitality and energy. Co-Q10 is directly involved in creating 95% of the body’s usable energy.  It can increase the pumping strength of an aging heart through increased energy production, which in turn enhances the amount of blood flowing through the heart and out to the body.

When you are young and healthy, your liver can produce adequate amounts of Co-Q10.  But as you get older, your liver struggles to detoxify the chemicals in your food and environment.  Over time, your ability to maintain efficacious amounts of Co-Q10 is severely compromised, which can dramatically impact your health.  While CoQ10 production levels peak around age 20, they can decline to an average of just 68% of peak production by age 40.  By age 80, CoQ10 levels can drop to 43% of normal, healthy levels–which is why it is important to add CoQ10 to your health regimen!

  1. Omega-3 Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are the healthy fats you cannot live without. They are critical to every cell in your body and essential for normal growth, functioning and anti-aging. Since the body cannot manufacture them, EFAs must come from the food you eat and/or nutritional supplements. Most Americans eat plenty of saturated fats, but few eat the fats that you need to support healthy blood pressure and a healthy heart.

It’s a fact of life. Maintaining balance in the female physiology is complex … because women’s hormones are in a constant state of flux, waxing and waning like the moon.  The balance becomes even more delicate when the body begins to decrease its estrogen production.  Whether you need ongoing or transitional support, you’ll be amazed by how much easier it is to fight stress and fatigue and bring your system back into balance with Omega-3s. Life Priority’s Omega-3 Priority helps support mood, memory, blood lipid levels, and cardiovascular health. This product is really a no-brainer for all women, no matter how old they are.

Calcium and magnesium supplementation — along with exercise and a healthy diet —is the best way to support healthy bones

  1. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body and plays a vital role in many areas of health including the maintenance of proper nerve and muscle function, normal blood clotting, cardiovascular function, proper sleep, and bone formation. 99% of the body’s calcium is found in your bones, which serves two functions: it provides strength and structure and it serves as a calcium bank or reserve. Whenever your body senses a decrease in blood calcium, calcium is removed from the bones. This is why it’s absolutely vital to maintain your calcium intake on a daily basis, so that calcium is not drawn out of your bones setting up the stage for osteoporosis.

Preventing osteoporosis

One out of two women older than age 50 suffers an osteoporosis-related fracture during her lifetime. Complications from these fractures are a major killer of women. Recent research shows that osteoporosis is not limited to post-menopausal women. Each year men suffer one third of all the hip fractures that occur, and one third of these men will not survive more than a year. Fortunately, research has also shown that a healthy diet, weight-bearing exercise and calcium supplementation can aid the body in building and maintaining healthy bone mass, while reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

  1. Magnesium is necessary for every major biological process including the body’s production of healthy bone. Magnesium helps the body absorb calcium, converts vitamin D into its active form for calcium absorption and helps regulate calcium.

Often called the “relaxation” mineral, magnesium assists in helping you sleep through the night peacefully without leg cramps, spasms heart palpitations, or anxiety. In fact, if you experience twitching or cramping of any kind, you probably have a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is found in nuts, seeds, legumes, green leafy vegetables, whole grains and avocados. Taking Magnesium PriorityÔ is a great way to ensure that you are getting the adequate daily allowance of this vital mineral.

Spring into Shape & Boost Your Immune System

Before you put on your favorite workout clothes, do your stretches, and head out for a run, consider what you can do to make your health a priority by strengthening your immune system and focusing on supplements to help you get in shape.

Here are three specific areas where we can help you: Joint Health, Immune Health, and Mental Health.

Joint Health

Are you one of the 27 million otherwise healthy individuals in our nation that suffer from painfully worn out, stiff achy joints? Research indicates that 43% of all adults over the age of 45 struggle with noticeable joint discomfort in their hands, knees, hips and/or spine. Statistics confirm that by age 65 nearly 80% of the population will have experienced substantially compromised joint structure — a condition that will only worsen with time, unless it is addressed proactively.

Joint deterioration is a serious matter, and Life Priority is proud to offer quality supplements like Joint Decision™ and Total Joint Complex™ for your joint health to help keep you active.

Brain Health

Everything that happens in your brain — every memory, every thought, every emotion, every innovation is a result of the release of neurotransmitters, which ae made from the nutrients in your diet. However, there’s a very good change that your daily diet may not be providing the optimum amount of raw materials your brain needs for good brain health. Proper nutrition and quality supplements by Life Priority such as Lift™, Lift Caps™, Mind™, PS Priority™ and Omega-3 Priority™ contribute to brain health and mood enhancement.

Lift™ An energy-boosting nutritional supplement to help you fire up your brain naturally and add the key nutrients to help eliminate mental fatigue and brain fade. Lift Caps™ Lift Caps™ fire up your brain naturally and jump start your day; capsule form — a convenient alternative to Lift™ powder.

Mind™ A Life Priority-Designer Food Formula by Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw®; a great tasting lemon-lime citrus cooler containing choline, also known as brain food”, and essential nutrient cofactors.

PS Priority™ – Phosphatidylserine is a cell membrane phospholipid needed for proper memory function. Adequate levels help enhance membrane flexibility, permeability, strength, and the ability to withstand stress.

Small Steps to Big Changes

Take the Stairs: Besides the extra calories you’ll burn by taking the stairs, you’ll also strengthen muscle and improve cardiovascular health. So make an intentional decision to take the stairs instead of opting for the elevator or escalator.

Park Further From Your Destination: Again, an easy way to burn some additional calories. Not only that, but how many times have you circled around the parking lot, looking for that sweet spot close to the entrance. Just hoof it – save time and get moving.

Make the Most of Your Lunch Break: Instead of sitting in front of your computer or scrolling social media during your lunch break, go for a short walk. Just like parking further from your destination, it doesn’t take much to make a difference. Adding in a 20 minute walk each day, paired with other small changes can add up to big changes.

Commercial Breaks: Be honest. You don’t have time to fit in exercise, but you have plenty of time to watch television, right? Use those commercial breaks to fit in some jumping jacks, crunches, squats and push-ups.

D., that introduced glucosamine hydrochloride (GHCl/Joint Decision™) as a possible solution for joint pain symptoms.

If one looks at the totality of evidence (1A drug rating in Europe – the highest possible), it is clear glucosamine does help joints and needs to be taken long term.

Personally, I began using Joint Decision™ as a retail customer in 1996 because I had a severe problem in the big knuckle on my right hand. It was not until my third week of using Joint Decision™ that I noticed any effect. I noticed that I had more flexibility and, within six weeks, I was pain-free!

Soon afterwards, my company, Life Priority, Inc., began offering a pharmaceutical grade form of glucosamine HCl in our Joint Decision™ product.

Since 1996, Joint Decision™, has helped thousands of people lower or eliminate joint pain symptoms. Users are able to work without pain again, play with grand-kids and live a more pain-free life because Joint Decision™ has helped them deal with joint pain without using medication.

Even though Joint Decision™ is made by our bodies from our food, in many cases the food supply does not keep up with the demands on the cartilage to cushion the movement of our bones. Without adequate glucosamine from the diet, cartilage becomes thinner and inflammation begins. Without proper cushioning from healthy cartilage, bones can begin to rub together which is basically osteoarthritis. It is a good idea for athletes to take it to help prevent wear and tear from catch up later as it helps repair micro trauma, which is much easier than trying to fix broken tissue. There are many other essential nutrients that should be in our diet in order to keep joints healthy. Please contact me personally to discuss your specific dietary supplement use. To address existing joint pain symptoms and to prevent joint inflammation, please consider using Joint Decision™ as your first line of defense. There is a difference in the quality of  glucosamine in the marketplace. Life Priority purchases the raw ingredient used in Joint Decision™ so we know that it is a pharmaceutical-grade.

Late Life Boost in Longevity

Glucosamine Late Life Boost in Longevity; Glucosamine has long been touted for its ability to promote the replication of cartilage

Glucosamine has long been touted for its ability to promote the replication of cartilage—making for healthier joints—and as a vanquisher of arthritis.* Glucosamine is also known to delay cancer growth.1 What’s more, freely available glucosamine acts as an inhibitor of glycolysis. Glycolysis is the cellular degradation of glucose. This process yields ATP as an energy source, which lowers blood glucose levels, mimicking a low carbohydrate diet, and increasing health and longevity, according to a new scientific report.

* See “Postmenopausal Women Benefit from Glucosamine” in the September, 2004 issue; “Supplements Put the Brakes on Osteoarthritis” in the December, 2003 issue; and “Glucosamine Sulfate Scores, Again, Against Arthritis” in the March, 2003 issue.

The Equivalent of a Human Living Eight Years Longer

In this new study, seasoned researchers—predominantly interested in life extension interventions—suggest that glucosamine may actually have another use that could have potential implications in extending human life span.2 The title clearly states that, “D-Glucosamine supplementation extends life span of nematodes and of ageing mice.” Published in Nature Communications on April 8, 2014, Swiss and German researchers experimented with two groups of mice whose age was 100 weeks—which is old for mice. The mice in the first group were given glucosamine as a supplement to their normal diet, while those in the second group did not receive glucosamine (the controls). The results indicate that glucosamine in relatively moderate doses (about 4 g/day for a human) could extend longevity by 10% when taken late in life (at the human equivalent age of 65 years). That’s an expansion in longevity that translates to eight years of extra life for humans! So if your “normal” death age would have been 84, with glucosamine (if it works for humans) you would live to 92. That’s a big deal!

† No such calculations were provided in the paper. However, Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw computed the human equivalence from the data provided and their knowledge of mice chow, into which the glucosamine was blended.

Protection from Diabetes Also Found

The researchers also observed that the glucosamine-fed mice did not just live 10% longer than the controls; they also had improved glucose metabolism, which indicated that they were protected from diabetes, a chronic disease that commonly affects obese individuals and the elderly. That could certainly play a role in longevity.

Glucosamine Produces the Effects of a Low-Carb Diet

The Swiss/German scientists also studied the effects of glucosamine on nematode roundworms (Caenorhabditis elegans) and in particular their mitochondria, the parts of the cell responsible for energy conversion. They observed that glucosamine increased the breakdown of amino acids and fatty acids, similar to the effects of consuming a low-carbohydrate diet. Low-carbohydrate diets are known to reduce blood pressure and harmful blood fats. These effects were independent of the hexosamine pathway through which glucosamine’s cartilage/joint/arthritis properties are thought to operate. Glucosamine was found to extend life span in C. elegans by impairing glucose metabolism that activates AMP-activated protein kinase (an enzyme that plays a role in cellular energy homeostasis) and increases mitochondrial biogenesis (the increased creation of mitochondria in our cells). The longevity of the roundworms was extended by 5% in the study.

Used for Many Years with Low Side Effects

The researchers noted that the effects of glucosamine on mice and worms do not provide proof that glucosamine can extend human life. However, study researcher author Michael Ristow, M.D. from the Energy Metabolism Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Switzerland said that unlike other substances that could potentially extend life span, glucosamine as a supplement has been in use for many decades and is not associated with relevant side effects other than rare allergic reactions.

Presumed Role of Reactive Oxygen Species

Dr. Ristow is a German medical researcher who has published influential articles on biochemical aspects of mitochondrial metabolism, and particularly about the health-promoting role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity and cancer, as well as general aging due to a process called mitohormesis.Hormesis is the term for generally favorable biological responses to low exposures to toxins and other stressors. A pollutant or toxin or ROS showing hormesis thus has the opposite effect in larger, rather than smaller, amounts. Mitohormesis is hormesis in mitochondria.

Glucosamine may actually
have another use that might
extend human life span.

Cited Favorably for His Research

Of interest, Dr. Ristow has been cited before in Life Enhancement for his paper, “Low-dose lithium uptake promotes longevity in humans and metazoans,”3 about which we commented favorably in an article titled “Lithium Promotes Longevity, Mood, and Love” in the January 2013 issue. We also cited his paper, “Neurodegenerative disorders associated with diabetes mellitus,” about which we wrote, “Avoiding Diabetes Can Help You Avoid Alzheimer’s” in the August, 2004 issue.

Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw have also found reason to cite Dr. Ristow. In their Volume 17 No. 2 • February 2014 issue of Life Extension News, they wrote about his article, “Antioxidants prevent health-promoting effects of physical exercise in humans.”4 “The scientists [Ristow et al] interpreted the results to be a consequence of hormesis—that is, these beneficial effects of exercise were the result of adaptive changes induced by ROS, which were prevented when adequate amounts of antioxidants were present. ‘Consistent with the concept of mitohormesis, exercise-induced oxidative stress ameliorates insulin resistance and causes an adaptive response promoting endogenous antioxidant defense capacity. Supplementation with antioxidants may preclude these health-promoting effects of exercise in humans.’” [References removed. Emphasis added.]

Supplementation with antioxidants
may preclude these health-promoting
effects of exercise in humans.

This is important because in the Swiss/German paper, the authors seem to believe that antioxidants interfere with glucosamine life span extension, at least in C. elegans. They wrote, “Mitochondrial ROS signaling in nematodes and, in particular, mitohormesis suggests that a low-dose, transient increase in ROS formation promotes metabolic health and life span, thereby questioning the free radical theory of ageing. To test whether the increase in ROS is essential for a GlcN [glucosamine]-mediated extension of life span, we repeated the initial life span experiment in the presence of the antioxidants butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA) and N-acetyl-cystein (NAC), respectively. Although neither BHA nor NAC had a detectable effect on C. elegans life span in the absence of GlcN, the life span-extending capabilities of GlcN were nullified in the presence of BHA or NAC. This indicates that the transient increase in ROS is required for the extension of life span caused by GlcN, thus providing additional support for adaptive ROS signaling or mitohormesis or both.” [References and Figures left out. Emphasis added]. Since the amount of BHA and NAC used were not given, it is difficult to discern whether the results were ordinary hormesis caused by too few antioxidants.

Recent Epidemiology Studies For Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Could glucosamine help you ski into your '80s
Interestingly, two recent epidemiological studies on more than 77,000 individuals suggest that intake of glucosamine supplements is associated with reduced mortality in humans.5 In this study, antioxidants were found to not relate to increased mortality, but the variety used were low potency, and therefore unlikely to have any effect on longevity [See Durk & Sandy’s article “The Triage Theory of Aging” on page 20.] The strongest associations observed were between glucosamine and chondroitin use and total mortality where the use of each was associated with decreased risks of total mortality. The researchers suggested that the mechanism may involve anti-inflammatory properties,

The study authors believe that anti-
oxidants interfere with glucosamine
life span extension. We don’t.

In the other epidemiology paper on glucosamine, also involving more than 77,000 subjects aged 50–76; glucosamine was associated with a significant decreased risk of death from cancer and with a large risk reduction for death from respiratory diseases. Use of glucosamine with or without chondroitin was associated with reduced total mortality and with reductions of several broad causes of death. In conclusion, those taking glucosamine were 13 per cent less likely to die over an eight-year period, than those who did not. Again, the researchers thought that the risk reduction by glucosamine and chondroitin was for the range of diseases associated with inflammation.6

Should We Now Start Taking Glucosamine Supplements?

Ristow replies: “This may be considered a valid option, and yes, I have started taking glucosamine myself.” However, he points out that, “diabetics should perform tight blood glucose control, especially during the first weeks.”7

About the epidemiology studies, Dr. Ristow said, “Unlike with our longer living mice, such an association is no definite proof of the effectiveness of glucosamine in humans.” Yet, he continued, “But the chances are good, and since unlike with most other potentially lifespan-extending drugs there are no known relevant side effects of glucosamine supplementation, I would tend to recommend this supplement.”

Given the safety of glucosamine, you
might consider increasing your dose.

Caution about Jumping to Conclusions

Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at Kings College in London cautioned people against jumping to conclusions.8 “Glucosamine is an interesting molecule that could affect us subtly in many ways,” Spector said in a statement released by the Science Media Center in England. Dr. Spector was not involved in the Ristow study.

Continuing, “If an even modest effect on aging were proven it would be a major advance. However, humans are not the same as worms or rodents, and studies will need careful replication before we get over-excited,” he said.

Safety and Use Extension

If you are already taking glucosamine and chondroitin for joint relief, given the overwhelming safety of these nutrients, and the multiplicity of benefits demonstrated in several species (including humans), you might consider increasing your dose. It could prove to be a real bargain!

Joint Pain

Dealing With Joint Pain?

“Arthritis is the number-one disability in the United States.  Yet, there’s no medical cure and none in sight.”(1)

“Approximately two out of three people age thirty-five and older have osteoarthritis.” (2)

“Osteoarthritis is a much bigger problem than rheumatoid arthritis by thirty to fifty times. Put another way: One out of five people have osteoarthritis, one out of one hundred has rheumatoid arthritis.” (3)

“Glucosamine (acquired by the body from food) is an important component without which our bodies cannot live.” (4)

“Getting enough glucosamine from foods in the diet is not practical.” (5)

“The best way of getting glucosamine is through dietary supplementation. (6)

“The advantage of taking glucosamine as a dietary supplement is that it can be grabbed by chondrocytes and used to build more cartilage.” (7)

“In fact, glucosamine is the first-line drug of choice for treating osteoarthritis in several European countries. The research is solid and convincing.” (8)

“No adverse side effects have been reported….”(9)
Greg Pryor; Life Priority; Joint Pain
I have started my article with quotes from a book written by my friend, Dr. Luke Bucci, Ph.D. Dr. Bucci wrote “Healing Arthritis The Natural Way to help explain how certain nutrients can help people avoid joint pain and/or osteoarthritis.  I met Dr. Bucci in 1996 in Salt Lake City when I participated in a nationally-televised 700 Club TV documentary that introduced the value of including the use of a dietary supplement, glucosamine, as a possible solution for joint pain symptoms.

In 1996, G HCl was not available in drug stores or health food stores.  Now, after many years of success of helping thousands of joint pain sufferers lower the symptoms of osteoarthritis, it is available everywhere.  In 1996, only vets were using it as they would put it in the feed for horses who were having joint problems.  I would like to share my successful experience of using glucosamine, tell you what it is, how it works, and why you should consider using it for your joint pain problems and to prevent future problems.

Personally, I began using GHCl as a retail customer in 1996 because I had a severe problem in the big knuckle of my right hand.  I could hardly bend my knuckle and I couldn’t swing a golf club without pain.  I began using GHCl seriously since there are no known side effects.

I began using 3 capsules (500 mg per cap) 3 times a day.  For the first 2 weeks, I didn’t notice anything, and I almost gave up using it.  I figured that it was not going to help me.  Most of us want instant results but, unfortunately, sometimes it takes several weeks to notice the value of using GHCl.

In my third week of using GHCl, I still had some pain, but I noticed that I had more flexibility in my knuckle.  After a month, the pain was gone completely!  After I knew that glucosamine worked, I introduced my Joint Decision™ product (G HCl) to customers at www.lifepriority.com.

Since 1996, Joint Decision, has helped thousands of people lower or eliminate joint pain symptoms.  My customers have told me that they are able to work without pain, play with grand-kids and live a more pain-free life because Joint Decision has helped them deal with joint pain without using medication.

Glucosamine supplements are manufactured in a laboratory from chitin, a substance found in the shells of shrimp, crab, lobster.  It is a dietary supplement and is not a pharmaceutical drug.  It is illegal in the US to market any dietary supplement as a treatment for any disease or condition  Of the available forms of glucosamine, I suggest that people use the glucosamine hydrochloride (GHCl) form since it is the more active form and does not contain salt.  I do not support the use of chondroitin sulfate unless the use of GHCl does not lower the symptoms.

Although our joints need a long list of nutrients If you, or anyone that you know, has joint inflammation or if you want to prevent inflammation, please consider using Joint Decision or Total Joint Complex from Life Priority, Inc.  There is a difference in the quality of GHCl.  Life Priority purchases the raw ingredient that is used in our Joint Decision product so we know that it is a pharmaceutical grade.

Do not continue to suffer with joint pain and use drugs for pain the rest of your life.  Perhaps Joint Decision or Total Joint Complex is all that you need to eliminate the symptoms!
