Father Time, Mother Nature, and the Speed of an MLB Fastball!
By Greg Pryor, MLB 1971-1986
As a professional baseball player for 16 seasons, I had to contend with three formidable opponents: Mother Nature, Father Time, and the challenge of hitting MLB fastballs to keep my job. Now, at 74, as I look back, I realize that facing a fastball was easier than dealing with the relentless effects of aging—what I call "Ma and Pa.”The Aging Process
Recently, I encountered two people I hadn't seen in years, and it was clear that time had taken its toll on them. The aging process is not for the faint-hearted and it never takes a break. Needless to say, we live with both “Ma and Pa” (i.e., Mother Nature and Father Time) every single day. But how does facing an MLB fastball fit into this equation?I recently watched a Netflix documentary called Fastball. It featured interviews with some of the greatest fastball pitchers in MLB history like Bob Feller, Nolan Ryan, and Bob Gibson, as well as legendary hitters like George Brett, Johnny Bench, and Mike Schmidt. These pitchers could throw a baseball anywhere from 95 to 105 MPH, and the hitters described the lightning-fast reactions needed to connect with those pitches. Thanks to my ability to adapt to Ma and Pa, I managed to keep my job hitting fastballs for 16 seasons. However, toward the end of my career, Ma and Pa made it clear that I couldn't catch up to the fastball as I once could. I knew my best days were behind me.
What’s Your Batting Average?
Keeping up with the fast pace of life is much like hitting an MLB fastball. To succeed in both life and business, you need to learn the "game" and avoid repeating mistakes. If we don’t adapt quickly enough, we miss opportunities or even lose our jobs. We need to know when to make our moves, just as a hitter must decide when to swing to make solid contact.
The Aging Process Affects More Than the Body
I'm more aware of the aging process now than I ever was in my 20s and 30s. Today, my biggest concern is the aging of my brain. Fortunately, at 42, I discovered ways to slow down the aging process. While I knew I was aging, I was shocked at how quickly it seemed to be happening. This realization led me to enter the health and nutrition industry, where I learned how to slow aging by consuming specific essential nutrients in the right amounts. I began encouraging my body’s repair processes. Every day, I take at least six different dietary supplements (Lifeguard™, Lift™, Mind™, PS-Priority™, Omega-3 Priority™, Vitamin D3 Priority™, and Muscle Memory™) to "feed" my brain. I do this because I want to avoid becoming a burden on others due to cognitive decline.
Stay In The Game
Don’t wait until the "fastballs" in your life catch you off guard. Your body and brain are aging with each passing day. The rallying cry of the 2015 World Champion KC Royals was "Keep the Line Moving!" My rallying cry to you is "Keep Your Brain Working!”
If you’d like to know more about the dietary nutrients I use to keep my brain nourished daily, feel free to email me at gpryor@lifepriority.com. I’d be happy to help you keep hitting the mental "fastballs" in your life.
