There is significant evidence that adequate amounts of the semi-essential nutrient amino acid arginine can (with the help of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine) stimulate the release of human growth hormone from the brain’s pituitary gland, which is important in maintaining a youthful ratio of muscle to fat. Sometimes this effect is called “protein sparing” because growth hormone tends to protect body protein from being used as an energy source, as occurs on a reduced-calorie diet.
