Improving lives a priority for former Royal Greg Pryor: by Jeff Deters

Greg Pryor has been retired from baseball for nearly 30 years, but he’s still involved in the game he loves in a unique way.

Pryor, who served as a backup infielder for the Kansas City Royals from 1982 to spring training of 1987, owns and operates Life Priority (www.lifepriority.com), a health and nutrition company that’s geared toward improving ones physical fitness and mental health. The company offers scientifically-formulated nutritional supplements and has been in business since 1994. Its clientele includes everyone from pro athletes to umpires to normal people looking to better their lives.4 essential supplementsWith all the advances in science and health since he retired, Pryor said he would have liked to have had that knowledge back when he played.

“There are so many things that an athlete can do now to improve their performance both mentally and physically that were not available to athletes in my era,” Pryor said. “And it wasn’t that they weren’t available, it was that we just didn’t know about them…..to see the full article, visit The Topeka Capital-Journal or follow the link below.

The aging process is certainly not for the weak. The Speed of an MLB Fastball vs Father Time, Mother Nature by Greg Pryor.

The Speed of an MLB Fastball vs Father Time, Mother Nature!

The Speed of an MLB Fastball vs Father Time, Mother Nature! For 16 seasons as a pro baseball player, I had to deal with Mother Nature, Father Time, and What happens to MLB players when baseball season is over? A very important aspect of off season conditioning is the diet.hitting MLB fastballs in order to keep a job.  At age 66 now and looking back, I think that it was easier to hit a MLB fastball than it is to deal with Mother Nature and Father Time (Ma and Pa). The aging process is certainly not for the weak.

Recently, I saw two people who I had not seen for many years.  It was very evident from their appearance that they were much older from living with Ma and Pa.  The aging process never sleeps.  We all live closely with both Ma and Pa every day.  How does facing an MLB fastball fit into this equation though?

Recently, I watched a Netflix documentary called “Fastball”.  Many of the most notable fastball pitchers in MLB baseball history, the Fellers, Ryans, and Gibsons were interviewed with many of the best fastball hitters in history, the Brett’s, Bench’s, and Schmidt’s.   The MLB pitchers who were interviewed could throw a baseball from 95 MPH to 105 MPH.  The hitters interviewed explained how quickly they had to recognize the pitch and then swing their bats.  To find out how quickly that the brain/body needs react to hit a MLB fastball, go to this site. http://www.ballplayerplus.com/science-hitting-major-league-fastball/

Because I managed to work well enough with Ma and Pa in my career, I was able to keep a job hitting fastballs for 16 pro seasons.  Towards the end of my career, Ma and Pa “informed me” that I was unable to catch up to the fastball like I could when I was younger.  I knew that the best days of my career were almost over.

Keeping up with the fast pace in life is much like hitting a MLB fastball.  To succeed in life and in business, one needs to learn how to play the “game” and to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.  If we don’t do it well enough, we miss out on opportunities to advance in our jobs or even lose our jobs.  We need to know when to make our decisions to swing early enough to get the hits that we want in every day life.

I am more aware of the aging process now more than when I was in my 20’s and 30’s. Now, I am more concerned about the aging of my brain than anything else. I am fortunate that, when I was 42, I was introduced to ways to slow up the aging process.

I knew that I was aging, but I was shocked at how quickly it seemed to be happening.  That is the biggest reason why I entered the health and nutrition industry.  I began learning how to slow up the aging process through the consumption of certain essential nutrients in adequate amounts.  I began encouraging the repair process each day. I use at least 6 different Life Priority nutrients via dietary supplements that may help “feed” my brain.  I do this because I do not want to be a burden on others because of my inability to think and reason properly.

Don’t wait until “the fastballs” in your life are being thrown by you!  Your body and brain is aging with each passing day.  The rally cry of the ’15 World Champion KC Royals was, “Keep The Line Moving!”  My rally cry to you is “Keep Your Brain Working!”.

For information on what dietary nutrients that I use to keep my brain nourished each day, send me an email at customerservice@lifepriority.com.  I will be glad to help you keep hitting the mental “fastballs” in your life.

The brain is one of the most important aspects of your body, but many times people don’t perform routine maintenance on it like their bodies.

Cultivate a Healthy Mind with Vitamin D3

The brain is one of the most important aspects of your body, but many times people don’t perform routine maintenance on it like they would their bodies. People work out at the gym and tone their bodies to keep a nice figure, but what about their brains? We constantly use our brains and sometimes take them for granted, assuming that they will continue to function at a high level, but the brain also requires fine tuning.

Vitamin D3 PriorityJust like our body needs proper nutrition, our brain also needs an adequate amount of nutrients to perform all the necessary tasks in a day. People can start to lose their mental sharpness as they age, but age isn’t the only thing that negatively affects the brain. Recent studies have shown that deficiencies in Vitamin D3 can lead to disorders like Alzheimer’s and dementia. The deficiencies in Vitamin D3 can lead to a decreased thinking ability, and can also affect memory.

Vitamin D3 is important to keep your brain healthy and performing at a high level. In addition to helping the brain be able to think and remember things better, Vitamin D3 also promotes an improved sense of well being and happiness. Vitamin D3 may also help with motor, muscle and heart functions while supporting your bone health. Vitamin D3 is extremely important to your overall health, but especially in regards to your brain, so make sure you have enough and don’t become Vitamin D3 deficient.

Studies have shown it can be safe to use Vitamin D3 supplements and thus boost your health. Here at Life Priority, Vitamin D3 can be found in our Vitamin D3 product and would be a great addition to your diet. Start living healthier today and invest in Vitamin D3.

Do You Want a Real Lift for Mental Fatigue?

(Life Priority was formed in 1994 by owners, Greg and Michelle Pryor, to provide truthful, up-to-date information about dietary supplements and the supplement industry.  They also wanted to supply high-quality, research-based, health products to customers.  Greg and Michelle were retail customers of many of the products that are offered at Life Priority.)

Since 1991, Life Priority has been offering consumers high-quality, research-driven products. Many products are called Designer Food formulas and were created by Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw for their own personal use.  Durk & Sandy co-authored the NY Times best-seller, Life Extension, A Practical Scientific Approach, written specifically for doctors.  In the past, most medical schools did not give doctors much information about how vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. used in adequate amounts, could slow up the aging process, help improve memory, and speed up recovery after exercise or injury.

Durk & Sandy wanted to provide doctors with the research available at the time on how  certain nutrients could help people live a healthier lives, both mentally and physically.

At the time that Life Extension was published, the information was not available to doctors.  The information in the book has stood the test of time.

Several of the Life Priority Pearson & Shaw Designer Food formulas contain nutrients that the body use to make neurotransmitters.  Every thought and emotion in the brain is caused by the release of neurotransmitters.  In many cases, the modern-day diet does not provide enough of the nutrients necessary to make adequate amounts of neurotransmitters.  The Life Priority products, Lift and Lift Caps, contain specific nutrients found in food along with a small amount of caffeine, 80 mg per serving.  These specific nutrients may help the brain make and release noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter.

Those with low levels of noradrenaline generally have difficulty staying awake, concentrating, and paying attention to tasks.  When I used Lift for the first time in 1991, I knew that it worked because I felt bright-eyed and bushy-tailed within 30 minutes and it lasted for 4-6 hours!  It is, possibly, the healthiest and least expensive way to get “5 hour energy!”

It is important to realize that Lift does not need caffeine make it work.  The caffeine is added to simply help the brain release a little quicker.  The other nutrients in Lift and Lift Caps are what the body (brain) uses to make noradrenaline, not the caffeine.

The reason why I wrote the above information is to make you aware of what brain “energy” really is.  It is not simply caffeine!  Many caffeinated beverage do not contain enough nutrients to help your brain make more noradrenaline.  An over consumption of caffeine during the day, without replenishing the body with nutrients to make more noradrenaline, might cause a “crash” caused from excessive caffeine consumption.

The FDA suggests that a person does not consume more than 400mg of caffeine per day.

Thank you for reading.  I will be interested in hearing your comments or questions

Take Vitamin D supplements.

The Amazing Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 PriorityParents have always encouraged their kids to go outside and play, and this is especially true for today’s world full of computer devices, smart phones, video games and countless other gadgets. It’s far too easy to sit inside a nice cozy house and get lost in the newest episode of the latest hit show or surf the net for hours on end, but this could actually be more harmful than believed. The lack of Vitamin D (something we get naturally from the sun) can potentially be harmful. So what can we do if we do not want to frolic in the sun? The answer: take Vitamin D supplements.

In a recent study by the University of Kentucky, researchers discovered that Vitamin D is important for maintaining a healthy brain. The study was performed on rats, but the results are still relevant to human counterparts. Rats with lower levels of Vitamin D struggled with cognitive functions like learning and memory. If rats have a hard time retaining and recalling new information, we could be in trouble since we have so many distractions. Vitamin D is also important to help fight depression and maintain bone health. In addition, low levels of Vitamin D are associated with Alzheimer’s disease and certain cancers and heart issues.

So maybe our parents were right in encouraging us to go outside and get some sun, but if we can’t find the time, Vitamin D supplements also work. Either way, make sure your diet is sufficient in Vitamin D to help avoid potential health problems.

5 Tips for Improving Your Sleep Quantity & Quality

Few things in life are as universal and as neglected as sleep. While our society does not necessarily promote healthy lifestyles or sleep patterns, you can take your health into your own hands by implementing these tips for better and more restorative sleep.

The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is crucial for our health including our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Each person has a different level of sleep that is optimal for their needs. Part of it depends of genetic factors and part based on physiological factors such as age, sex, and previous sleep amounts. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a simplified definition for what entails an adequate amount of sleep is a sleep from which one wakes up naturally with a feeling of refreshment.

Negative Effects Of Inadequate Sleep

According to Psych Central, there are a multitude of negative long-term and short-term effects caused by insufficient amounts of quality sleep. These include:

  • Lower stress threshold: When you’re tired, even simple and mundane tasks can become more challenging.
  • Memory impairment: Deep levels of sleep encourage the growth of connections between cells, and REM assists memory formation.
  • Impaired concentration: Alertness and focus can decrease with insufficient levels of sleep. With sleep deprivation, you can have difficulty concentrating on tasks and can be overconfident in your ability to perform.
  • Higher resting blood pressure: Increased blood pressure can result from a lack of sleep. Even losing half a night of sleep can increase blood pressure in people with hypertension.
  • Increased appetite: If you consistently experience insufficient sleep, you may find yourself eating more in order to maintain levels of necessary energy, and thus increasing your propensity for obesity.
  • Greater risk of cardiac morbidity: Several factors can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks. Sleep deprivation is among them, and sleep deprivation leads to increased inflammation.
  • Decreased optimism and sociability: Sleep deprivation can impair your mood, making you less hopeful and enjoy social interactions less.
  • Lower creativity: Sleep deprivation may decrease the ability to experience emotions and think innovatively.

Also, there may be a link to sleep deprivation over the span of one’s life and the increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. According to an article in Medical News Today, those suffering from Alzheimer’s tend to spend less time asleep, and had higher levels of fragmented sleep compared with others who don’t.

Common Obstacles to Good Sleep

Stimulants such as coffee and nicotine can interfere with sleep patterns. Alcohol can also disrupt sleep, and the resulting quality of sleep will be subpar. Also, excessive noises, high or low temperatures and bright lights can detract from quality sleep. Studies are also showing that the use of mobile devices and watching screens near bedtime can impair the quality and quantity of your sleep, because of a blue light they emit that signals your brain to be awake and alert.  Eliminate these factors as much as possible before going to bed to promote the more restful, restorative sleep you need.

5 Tips for Improving Your Sleep

  1. Avoid caffeine (in coffee, chocolate, cola and tea) and tobacco for four to six hours before heading to bed. If you can, even consider eliminating these stimulants from your lifestyle!
  2. Consider putting away the screens an hour or so before bed. The blue light and brain activity keeps you awake longer, and may have you tossing and turning in bed at night.
  3. Create a bedroom environment that is more conducive for sleeping you greatly increase the chance of getting a restful night of sleep. Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and cool to promote restful slumber.
  4. Establish a pre-sleep routine to condition yourself for bed. Instead of jumping straight from activity to sleep, create a wind-down, transitional period where you partake in relaxing, non-stimulating activities such as recreational reading, taking a bath or practicing relaxation techniques.
  5. Refrain from lying awake in bed, as this can train your brain to associate your bed with being awake. It is best to only use your bed when you are sleeping. If after 15 minutes you find yourself staring up at the ceiling, completely alert, then get out of bed and read or do some other similarly quiet activity until you feel drowsiness begin to set in again.

Sleep Quantity AND Quality

Getting healthy, restorative sleep is about more than just he number of hours you clock each night. It’s also important to get productive sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed, because sleep is when your brain actively works on improving neuronal plasticity. This can have beneficial effects on your cognition and memory.

Good, quality sleep is so important that we have formulated our Productive Sleep supplement to try and help equip your brain with the resources it needs which may make it easy to slip into sleep and get the restorative rest your brain and body need.

PRODUCTIVE SLEEP – Supporting a good night’s sleep

Mondays I believe set the tone for my whole week.  Here are some of the things that I do to help prep for my Monday Motivation!

Do You need some Monday Motivation?

Mondays I believe set the tone for my whole week.  Here are some of the things that I do to help prep for my Monday Motivation!

  1. I am a List maker- I make a list of the tasks I would like to accomplish. I usually keep a list going of tasks that I need to complete. My list is pretty long, but that helps me to focus, prioritize and key into the areas of my personal and business that I want to focus on each day!  What I do is use that “ongoing” list to create my daily list. I always take just a couple minutes to do this every night before I go to bed.  I find that I don’t lay in bed thinking about all the things I have to get done tomorrow because I have already done that, made my notes, created my list and and I am ready for the day.  I love feeling I am making wise use of my time. I create my monthly calendars 6 months in advance and update my home and travel plans weekly.
  2. I  prepare myself for Monday by creating  Sunday night “Me Time” A self care routine. The weekends can be exhausting catching up on all the home projects. My emotional bank account  is empty and I need to refill. Some of my favorite things to do include– something as simple as taking a bath, taking some time to journal, reading a book, or listening to classical music, or watching my favorite tv show! Just this little bit of “me time” is enough to fuel me for my Monday Morning Motivation.

3. Getting up an extra 15 mins earlier-getting prepared for Monday helps make the morning a breeze,  I find that when I don’t have these things in order I feel can feel exhausted and overwhelmed.

  1. The most important thing I do is get mentally prepared–I always start my day (every LIFT Powder – Energizing nutrient drink mixday) with a glass of water and my vitamins. My favorite beverage is a combination of Lift and Mind. I knew the 1st time I took Lift that something very special helped me and my ability to think and prioritize my day. I felt energized and ready to jump into my day. After 20 years of working in the health and nutritional world I am convinced that the formulas of Lift and Mind are so valuable for the health of the human brain. Two very valuable ingredients L-phenylalanine and choline are MIND – Promoting focus and concentrationwell documented to support memory focus and motivation.
  2. I alway have breakfast- I believe Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! You can’t run a car on empty and you can run your body without supporting your health with a healthy breakfast.

Remember, you are the CEO! The CEO of your Life, Family or your Business.  I have looked at my Mondays and how they affect the rest of my week- Mondays have a huge impact on me and my week, and I want to do everything in my power to start my week of right!

Six to eight large glasses of water daily is sufficient for sedentary activities. Listen to your body, and when you're thirsty, DRINK WATER!

Drink Water

With the warm months upon us, I get frequent questions from my patients about daily fluid consumption. Did you know that your body has a regulatory mechanism just for that? It is located in the hypothalamus, and if you listen it will tell you when to drink up. Keep in mind that some liquids can do more harm than good. Caffeine and alcohol can both have a diuretic effect, promoting dehydration. The amount of fluid necessary varies based on activity level, ambient temperature, and your individual metabolic rate. Generally, six to eight large glasses of water daily is sufficient for sedentary activities. Just listen to your body, and when you’re thirsty, DRINK WATER!

One disease which doesn’t receive a lot of attention is heart disease, the leading killer of both men and women in the U.S.

Can Omega-3s Help Prevent Cardiovascular Disease in Women?

Countless health hazards and risks threaten us daily. With more and more pollutants in the air, and in our food and water, staying healthy and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is becoming more challenging. In addition to eating properly, people should also know about the main contributors to our health concerns. One disease which doesn’t receive a lot of attention is heart disease, the leading killer of both men and women in the U.S. And it’s especially harmful and deadly for women. Women need to know about the dangers of heart disease and what they can do to possibly prevent it.

Cardiovascular Disease is the #1 Killer of Women

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death of American women, killing more than one third of them who contract cardiovascular disease.
  • 35.3% of deaths in American women over the age of 20, or more than 432,000, are caused by cardiovascular disease each year.
  • More than 200,000 women die each year from heart attacks – 5x more women as breast cancer.
  • More than 159,000 women die each year of congestive heart failure, accounting for 56.3% of all heart failure deaths.

How Women Can Avoid Heart Disease with Omega-3s

Fit Women on Exercise Bikes

Research shows strong evidence that the omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, can boost heart health and lower triglycerides.  Omega-3s are found in fatty layers of cold-water fish and shellfish, plant and nut oils, English walnuts, flax seed, algae oils, and fortified foods. In the opinion of Life Priority Inc., the modern diet is deficient in adequate amounts of Omega-3s so we feel that using a fish oil supplement is the most effective and logical way to get adequate amounts of Omega-3 in your diet. There are the two main types of Omega-3s:

  1. Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These are plentiful in fish and shellfish. Algae often provides only DHA.
  2. Short-chain omega-3 fatty acids are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). These are found in plants, such as flaxseed. Though beneficial, ALA omega-3 fatty acids have less potent health benefits than EPA and DHA. You’d have to eat a lot to gain the same benefits as you do from fish.

Omega-3s are considered essential fatty acids. We need them for our bodies to work normally. Since essential fatty acids are not made in the body or are inefficiently converted from ALA to EPA and DHA, we need to get them from our diet.

EPA and DHA help maintain the healthy function of the brain and retina.  DHA is a building block of tissue in the brain and retina of the eye.  It helps with forming neural transmitters, such as phosphatidylserine, which is important for brain function.  Omega-3s are also thought to play an important role in reducing inflammation throughout the body – in the blood vessels, the joints, and elsewhere. Experts say that DHA and EPA have better established health benefits than ALA.

In our opinion, supplementing with Omega-3s is a no-brainer, especially for women.  From menstrual cramps to menopausal symptoms and breast cancer, Omega-3s can help women of all ages in many ways.  Omega-3s can help with hot flashes, osteoporosis, mood, memory, cardiovascular disease, blood pressure, lowering LDL cholesterol while helping to increase HDL levels and more.

Other Ways to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease

Supplementing your Omega-3s can have a significant positive impact on your health, but it should also be combined with other efforts to protect yourself from this cardiovascular killer. Below are several other positive changes you can make in your life to reduce your risk for heart disease:

  • Quit smoking.
  • Maintain a healthy BMI and waist circumference.
  • Exercise daily.
  • Pass on the processed foods.
  • Lower your sugar intake.
  • Have one glass of red wine per day.
  • Cut back on red meat, up your fish intake.

Eyes on D3

Thanks to recent research, the power of vitamin D3 is making headlines again. And, as the weather turns warmer, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to talk about the benefits of such an environment-related key to our health. Also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D3 is manufactured in the body’s skin when it is exposed to sunlight. To date, it has proven effective in preventing cancer, enhancing bone health, lowering blood pressure and decreasing depression. And now its anti-inflammatory properties are being highlighted through a recent study of aging mice. Life Priority - Eyes on Vitamin D

In this study, a group of mice with age-associated visual impairments caused by retinal inflammation were given doses of vitamin D3 for a period of six weeks, while another group with the same condition was given a controlled placebo. During that time, the retinal inflammation of the mice receiving D3 injections decreased significantly compared to those receiving the placebo. In fact, the D3 treatments also appeared to positively affect chronic inflammation in other areas of the rodents’ bodies overall.

What does this mean? It means great news for everyone who is fighting to maintain their eyesight as they get older. Simply getting more vitamin D3 could be an easy way to keep your vision intact for as long as you are!

Unfortunately, vitamin D3 only helps if we get adequate amounts of it. With so much of our attention being focused on avoiding the sun and lowering our risk of skin cancer, most of us don’t get the amount of D3 we need in order to reap its benefits.

This summer, instead of avoiding the sun altogether, adopt a balanced approach to sunlight and enjoy the outdoors. You’ll not only boost your mood and lower your risk of various diseases, you’ll also increase your chances for improved eyesight. If opportunities for outdoor activity aren’t readily available for you, consider talking to your doctor about vitamin D3 supplementation. It could be just the thing you need to see clearly for years to come!

Slowing Up the Aging Process in a Fast-Paced World

In today’s fast-paced lifestyles, most men are faced with increasing mental and physical What happens to MLB players when baseball season is over? A very important aspect of off season conditioning is the diet.demands as they age. Personally, I have found that an easy, logical way to slow up my aging process is to keep my body and brain more fit through the use of a few essential supplements with each meal.

I urge all men to consider, at least, the use of the following supplements: a high-quality multi to insure immune support, a potent omega-3 supplement for heart and brain health, specific nutrients that help promote a healthy prostate, and a simple amino sugar (glucosamine) for cartilage health.

I feel that the consistent, daily use of the right nutrients in supplement form (and in adequate amounts!) is one of the most important health decisions that we can make. Based on the past 20 years of being in the dietary supplement industry through my company, Life Priority, and my 16 year career as a pro athlete, I feel strongly that using high-quality supplements is imperative. No matter what you have read or what your doctor, chiropractor, nutritionist, etc. might suggest, your diet is most likely lacking in one or more essential nutrients. You can help yourself feel better and slow up your personal aging process by using high-quality supplements.

I have been involved as a retail customer or a marketer of dietary supplements since 1991. Prior to ’91, I was not aware of the value or importance of getting certain nutrients in my body on a consistent basis. Don’t leave your physical and mental well-being up to anyone else! It’s your life! Your body, including your brain, is aging each day and you can give yourself a better chance at living a healthier (and happier!) life by simply using enough of the right nutrients each day with meals or at bedtime.

Life Priority, Inc., was formed in 1994 to provide customers with time-tested high quality, research-based, scientifically-formulated health and nutritional products. A major Life Extension; Dopamine agonists such as cocaine and methamphetamine (“speed”) have been shown to increase the speed of the internal clock.;Arginine for pain, pain is the hallmark of sickle cell disease, with some patients in pain all of the time. Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw.;Niacin; Debate in the health community about the benefits of synthetic ingredients (created in a laboratory) in nutritional supplements.reason that Life Priority was formed was because of the research of 2 scientists who were the co-authors of a NY Times best-seller Life Extension, A Practical Scientific Approach, which was written specifically for doctors. The authors, Durk Pearson and Sandy Shaw, wrote Life Extension do that doctors could understand how using certain nutrients in adequate amounts could slow up the aging process.

Durk and Sandy’s multi-vitamin/mineral formula, One Per Meal Lifeguard, contains 25 different nutrients. Each Lifeguard capsule, meant to be used after meals 3 times per day, contains more than the minimum RDA’s. Three other Life Priority products, Omega-3 Priority, Prostate Priority, and Joint Decision/Total Joint Complex provide specific nutrients not contained in the Lifeguard product but do not contain many essential nutrients for specific areas of the body.

Take the advice of someone who, in 1991 at the age of 42, was enlightened by experts in the dietary supplement industry regarding the aging process–get more essential nutrients in your body each day by using “nutrition that you can feel!”

To Your Health!

FDA Structure/Function Claims

Life Priority, since 1994, has undergone two FDA inspections and would love to make you aware of the importance of the FDA and their involvement in the health and nutrition industry. Please see below the current structure/function claims that regulate and support the education of consumers.  We appreciate the ability to support you and your health with scientifically formulated, FDA inspected, health and nutritional products. The most important investment you can make is in your health and well-being.

FDA Supplement Structure Function Claims:

Dietary Supplements

Structure/function claims have historically appeared on the labels of conventional foods and dietary supplements as well as drugs. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) established some special regulatory requirements and procedures for structure/function claims and two related types of dietary supplement labeling claims, claims of general well-being and claims related to a nutrient deficiency disease. Structure/function claims may describe the role of a nutrient or dietary ingredient intended to affect the normal structure or function of the human body, for example, “calcium builds strong bones.” In addition, they may characterize the means by which a nutrient or dietary ingredient acts to maintain such structure or function, for example, “fiber maintains bowel regularity,” or “antioxidants maintain cell integrity.” General well-being claims describe general well-being from consumption of a nutrient or dietary ingredient. Nutrient deficiency disease claims describe a benefit related to a nutrient deficiency disease (like vitamin C and scurvy), but such claims are allowed only if they also say how widespread such a disease is in the United States. These three types of claims are not pre-approved by FDA, but the manufacturer must have substantiation that the claim is truthful and not misleading and must submit a notification with the text of the claim to FDA no later than 30 days after marketing the dietary supplement with the claim. If a dietary supplement label includes such a claim, it must state in a “disclaimer” that FDA has not evaluated the claim. The disclaimer must also state that the dietary supplement product is not intended to “diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease,” because only a drug can legally make such a claim. For more information about the difference between structure/function claims and disease claims, see 21 CFR 101.93, entitled “Certain Types of Statements for Dietary Supplements,” and FDA’s January 6, 2000 final rule entitled “Regulations on Statements Made for Dietary Supplements Concerning the Effect of the Product on the Structure or Function of the Body” (65 Fed. Reg. 1000).
